This driveway and patio project took us to Redbourne in Lincolnshire, where we installed a stunning resin driveway for our domestic customer. Resin driveways offer a range of benefits, and our client was seeking a long-lasting, sleek solution. In addition to the resin driveway, we also installed a beautiful sandstone patio at the back of the property.

DOMESTIC

Project Overview

This driveway and patio project was a wrap-around project, as work was required in the front and back of the property. This took a lot of preparation, as a full excavation of the existing surfaces was required before installing both the resin-bound driveway and the stone patio.

The total surface area of the project was 282 m2, with 234 m2 dedicated to resin-bound surfacing and the remaining 48 m2 to the sandstone paving at the rear of the property.

Challenges

The main challenges of this driveway and patio project were related to accessibility, as there were several major site constraints we had to work against in Redbourne. The concrete bridge on the premises made waste removal particularly difficult, as our standard method using a grab lorry, was not feasible with the limited space.

However, at StoneSet, we are professionals and will work to ensure that all our clients get the services they desire, regardless of the circumstance. For this project, we instead changed our waste removal process to rely on a Bobcat skid steer. This steer was used to remove waste from the site and load it into our 8-wheel tippers efficiently so we could leave the site clear once the project was complete.

Process

For this driveway and patio project, we completed the following to ensure outstanding results for our clients:

1. Excavation and Preparation

Our initial stage of the project was to prepare the site for the upcoming installations, which required work at both the front and back of the property. Following a complete excavation of the existing driveway and patio area, all spoil was removed from the site using our skid steer and tippers.

Once the site was clear and free of debris, we laid a geotextile membrane. This not only provides excellent ground stabilisation, to ensure that the driveway and patio will remain secure but also prevents weed growth underneath.

2. Hardcore Sub-Base Installation

Now the site was prepared, we moved on to installing a hardcore sub-base. This sub-based was installed in layers and compacted using our Bomag roller to ensure a solid and stable foundation for the upcoming driveway and patio project.

3. Edging Installation

We used Plaspave Sorrento Carrara stone edgings on top of the concrete foundation to prepare the site for the resin driveway. This created clean, defined boundaries to support the upcoming installation of the resin-bound surface.

4. Tarmac Base Layer

With the boundaries set, we installed an open-textured binder course tarmac which would act as the durable foundation for the resin-bound driveway and offer lasting stability for our clients.

5. Driveway and Patio Project Installation

The Sandstone patio was installed at the rear of the property using high-quality sandstone paving. This material is very durable and designed to last a long time, while also offering a very visually pleasing finish to the outdoor space.

For this driveway and patio project, our clients chose Whitby Abbey as their resin-bound driveway material, which is not only stunning but also UV-stable and offers a long-lasting finish.

Outcome

This driveway and patio project was successfully completed within the planned 5-day timeframe. Following our work, the finished driveway and patio area not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the property as a whole but also offered lasting solutions for our clients.

Both the resin-bound driveway and the sandstone patio are designed to last a long time, as they are durable. They are also low maintenance and robust, ensuring they will continue to look great for many years.

Despite the logistical challenges we faced during this project, the team at StoneSet adapted to the needs of the site quickly to deliver high-quality results that met all our client’s expectations.
